Is It Safe to Play Video Games on a Treadmill?
The honest answer is that it adds real risk. You are splitting your attention on a moving belt, and treadmills can hurt people even when they are paying full attention. So this isnt risk free, and it isnt for everyone.
If you do try it, here is how to cut the risk down. This is general advice and not medical advice.
Who should skip it or ask first
Talk to your doctor first if you have balance problems, dizziness, heart issues, joint problems, or you are new to exercise. The same goes if you are pregnant or take medication that can make you lightheaded.
Skip it if you have photosensitive epilepsy or get motion sick from games. Fast motion on a screen while your body is moving can make that worse.
The rules that matter most
- Use the safety clip. Clip it to your clothes every time. If you drift back, it stops the belt.
- Go slower than usual. Your normal pace is not your gaming pace. Start at a slow walk.
- Keep your eyes up and your feet centered. Drifting to the side or the back of the belt is the big risk.
- Keep the space behind you clear. Leave room in case you come off the back. Consumer Reports suggests at least 6 feet, and your manual may ask for more.
- Keep cords away from the belt. Use a wireless controller and route every cable away from the machine.
- Keep kids and pets away. A moving belt is dangerous for them, and they are a distraction for you.
- Stop before you make a change. Pause the game and slow the belt before you grab water, wipe your hands or change settings.
Pick the right game
Games with fast reactions, jump scares or sudden camera moves are a bad match. They pull your attention away from your feet and can make you flinch. Slower games you can pause are a much safer place to start. We keep a list of the best pause friendly games.
Know when to stop
Stop right away if you feel dizzy, sick, short of breath, or you have chest pain. Stop if you stumble. If you catch yourself drifting a lot, that is a sign to slow down or end the session.
Being tired counts too. When you are worn out, your footing gets worse. That is a good time to get off and finish the level on the couch.
Is a bike safer?
For most people, an exercise bike is the easier choice. You are sitting down and there is no moving belt to fall off. You can still get hurt, but you take away the biggest risk. We compare them in treadmill desk vs exercise bike for gaming.
Warning: Playing video games while using exercise equipment can lead to injury. Check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.
