Best Controllers for Treadmill and Bike Gaming
The best controller for working out is wireless, comfortable and hard to drop. For most people on a PC, that means an Xbox controller. Here is what to look for and a few good options.
These picks are based on what each controller offers and what matters during a workout, not a lab test. Controller models change often, so check the current version and price before you buy.
What matters during a workout
- Wireless. This one isnt optional on a treadmill. A cable near a moving belt is a hazard.
- Grip. Your hands will sweat. Textured grips help a lot.
- Comfort. You will hold it for a long time without resting your arms on anything.
- Battery life. You dont want it dying in the middle of a run.
- A solid connection. A USB dongle is often more stable than Bluetooth, so that is worth having if your screen is far away.
Best for most people: Xbox Wireless Controller
It works well with Windows PCs and most PC games support it right away. It connects over Bluetooth, or with Microsoft’s wireless adapter. It also runs on AA batteries, so you can swap in fresh ones and keep going. Rechargeable AAs work too.
Best if you are on PlayStation: DualSense
If you already game on a PS5, this is the easy pick. It works on PC too, and Steam has good support for it. The catch is that the battery is built in, so plug it in between sessions.
Worth a look for customizing: 8BitDo Ultimate controllers
8BitDo makes a range of wireless controllers that often cost less than the big names. Some models come with a charging dock, which makes it easy to keep one topped off. Check which systems the model you are looking at supports, since they vary.
Tips for any controller
- Get a silicone grip cover if your hands slip.
- Keep a small towel close and wipe your hands when you pause.
- Wrist straps are worth trying if you are worried about dropping it. If you do drop it, leave it until the belt has stopped.
- Charge it before you start, and check that it connects before you step on.
- Remap buttons if you can. Steam lets you do this in most games, so you can move tricky inputs to easier spots.
What about keyboard and mouse?
Skip them on a treadmill. On a bike with a desk you can make it work, but a controller is still much easier. Look for controller support when you pick a game. You can filter for it on our all reviews page.
